Insufficient attention has been paid to the linguistic dimensions of effective science communication of disasters. This preliminary study paper argues for a greater integration of linguistic training into science communication, particularly in disaster communication, by demonstrating how paralinguistic and metalinguistic choices, translation practices, and plurilingual accessibility influence public comprehension, trust, and response. Misinterpretations of probabilistic language, culturally inappropriate framing, and poorly translated terminologies can undermine even the most scientifically accurate messages. Strengthening linguistic competence in science communication is a risk-reduction imperative that can improve public understanding.
