Abstract

The maritime industry demands a high level of safety to achieve a Zero Accident condition, particularly in relation to the structural integrity of vessels. Classification surveyors play a strategic role in ensuring that ships comply with the applicable technical and regulatory standards of classification societies. This study describes the role of surveyors in supporting the Zero Accident program through technical verification, structural inspection, regulatory compliance assessment, and engineering-based recommendations. A case study of bottom plate Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UT) is presented to illustrate the application of engineering judgement within the classification survey process. The results show that surveyors ensure that inspection procedures are conducted in accordance with established standards, verify structural conditions against the minimum requirements of BKI Rules and provide technical recommendations whenever non-conformities are detected. Therefore, the role of surveyors directly contributes to achieving a Zero Accident environment in the maritime industry through the implementation of accountable and evidence-based engineering principles.
