Noise is unwanted sound generated by operational activities at certain levels and durations that can cause disturbances to human health and environmental comfort. Train noise can originate from several mechanisms and systems, but the main source is rolling noise. Rolling noise is caused by many factors, with the primary ones including train speed, train design, rail conditions, and weather. The current noise level in the Jakarta MRT train set, reaching 90–96 dB, still exceeds the required threshold. Referring to the document Volume 4: Employee’s
Requirements Particular Specification, Design and Installation issued in 2014, the maximum acceptable noise levels within tolerance are 75 dB for elevated areas and 85 dB for tunnels. To address this issue, various studies have been conducted by MRT Jakarta in collaboration with contractors and academics. Simulations, tests, and analyses related to noise issues were carried out, and several factors were identified that can reduce noise levels, including braking methods, track base selection, corrugation control, and operational speed.
