Abstract

The cushion rod, also referred to as a shaft adjuster, is an important component of the cushion system in a stamping press, supporting the forming process. Fracture of this component can reduce machine reliability and disrupt operational continuity. This study aims to develop a repair method for a cushion rod on an 800-ton Fukui stamping press through welded joint repair followed by post-weld heat treatment (PWHT). The component is manufactured from SCM440 low-alloy steel. The repair procedure comprised removal of the damaged section, surface preparation, fabrication of a replacement section by machining, welding, PWHT, reassembly, and functional testing. The process parameters controlled included preheating temperature, interpass temperature, PWHT temperature, and holding time. PWHT was applied to reduce residual stresses generated during welding and improve joint reliability. The results demonstrate that the combination of welding and PWHT can be applied as an alternative method for repairing a fractured SCM440 cushion rod. The repaired component was successfully reassembled into the machine and demonstrated proper operational function during functional testing. Therefore, the developed method has potential as an alternative repair solution for damaged stamping press components without requiring complete component replacement.
