Education and Workshop: Safe Perfume to Reduce Side Effects on Skin and Respiratory Health

Low public awareness regarding the hazards of chemicals contained in non-BPOM (unregistered) perfumes may elevate the risk of skin irritation, respiratory tract disorders, and other long-term health effects. To address this issue, an educational initiative and workshop entitled “Safe Perfume to Reduce the Risk of Adverse Effects on Skin and Respiratory Health” was conducted to enhance community understanding and skills in selecting and formulating safe perfumes. The activity was held at RPTRA Sutra Indah 3, located in Sunter Agung Subdistrict, Tanjung Priok District, North Jakarta, and was attended by 21 participants, most of whom were homemakers. The methodology encompassed a pre-test, interactive educational sessions, hands-on perfume-making practice, followed by a post-test and a participant satisfaction survey. The pre-test results revealed that 42.86% of participants had a low level of knowledge, 57.14% had a moderate level, and only 4.76% were in the high category. Post-intervention, the post-test scores demonstrated a notable improvement: 80.95% of participants achieved a high level of knowledge, while 19.05% were in the moderate category. No participants remained in the low category. Normality and homogeneity tests yielded p-values greater than 0.05, indicating that the data met the assumptions for parametric analysis. A paired T-test showed a statistically significant improvement in knowledge (p < 0.05). The satisfaction survey indicated a positive reception, with 74.29% of participants expressing high satisfaction and 25.71% reporting satisfaction. Participants expressed enthusiasm, citing the acquisition of new knowledge and interest in leveraging the skill for entrepreneurial purposes. The hands-on, interactive, and participant-engaged approach proved effective. This program demonstrates potential for replication in other regions to enhance public literacy on the safety of household products.
