Abstract

The air filter is an essential component of the engine intake system that functions to remove dust, dirt, and various contaminant particles from the incoming air before it enters the combustion chamber. The quality of air filtration can influence the combustion process, thereby affecting engine performance. This study aims to analyze the effect of different air filter types, namely the standard air filter, new standard air filter, and racing air filter, as well as spark plug variations on the performance of a 2005 Toyota Kijang Innova 2.0 A/T gasoline engine. The spark plug types evaluated in this study include standard, platinum, and iridium spark plugs, each of which was tested in combination with every air filter type. The performance parameters analyzed were engine power (horsepower) and torque, measured using a chassis dynamometer (dynotest). The results indicate that the standard air filter provided the best engine performance compared with the other air filter variations tested. Furthermore, under the same air filter conditions, the standard spark plug produced higher power and torque than the iridium spark plug. These findings suggest that both air filter characteristics and spark plug type influence engine performance, although improved performance is not necessarily associated with components that have higher specifications. Therefore, selecting an appropriate combination of air filter and spark plug can be an important factor in optimizing vehicle engine performance.
