The Relationship Between Self-Determination and Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy in Grade XII High School Students

Career Decision Making Self-Efficacy (CDMSE) refers to an individual’s belief in their ability to carry out tasks involved in the career decision-making process, including self-appraisal, gathering occupational information, goal selection, planning, and problem solving. One internal psychological factor assumed to influence CDMSE is self-determination, defined as an individual’s capacity to regulate and direct behavior autonomously through the fulfillment of autonomy, competence, and relatedness needs. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-determination and Career Decision Making Self-Efficacy among twelfth-grade students at SMA Negeri 6 Jakarta. A quantitative correlational design was employed. Data were collected using self-determination and CDMSE instruments that met validity and reliability criteria and were analyzed using Spearman Rank correlation. The results indicated a significant positive relationship between self-determination and CDMSE (r = 0.748; p < 0.05). Descriptively, the autonomy aspect of self-determination and the self- appraisal dimension of CDMSE obtained the highest scores, whereas relatedness and goal selection showed the lowest scores. These findings suggest that self-determination functions as a psychological foundationthat strengthens students’ confidence in the career decision- making process, while clarity of final career goals continues todevelop during late adolescence.References
